Germany Just Built a Record Breaking 365 Meter Wind Turbine That Towers Over the Eiffel Tower
Germany has finished the main structure of the world’s tallest wind turbine, an experimental 365-meter installation designed to boost energy generation.
A towering engineering feat has reached its peak in Germany, where a new wind turbine has claimed the title of the world’s tallest. Standing at a staggering 365 meters (1,197 feet) to the tip of its blades, the structure now eclipses the Eiffel Tower, surpassed in height only by the Berlin TV Tower within the country. The project, a collaboration between the Dresden-based engineering firm GICON and the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation (SPRIND), hit its final height on September 28, 2026.
Scaling New Heights with Telescoping Innovation
The record-breaking turbine, located in the former coal-mining region of Lusatia, utilizes a unique design to overcome the limitations of traditional construction. Because conventional cranes are unable to lift heavy components to such extreme heights, engineers employed an innovative telescoping tower system. The installation process involved assembling a surrounding lattice tower, installing the nacelle and rotor at a manageable height, and then using a specialized strand-lifting mechanism to hoist the inner tower into its final position at 300 meters.
This vertical reach is intended to capture more consistent, high-altitude wind currents that are largely shielded from the turbulence and friction found closer to the Earth’s surface. According to GICON, this placement could potentially double the annual energy yield compared to a standard turbine of the same rotor size. While the current pilot installation is rated at 3.8 megawatts, designers are already looking toward future iterations capable of exceeding 7 megawatts.
Optimizing Energy Potential at Altitude
Beyond the technical achievement of its height, the Schipkau project seeks to prove that high-altitude generation can coexist with existing infrastructure. Developers are testing a model where these massive towers are integrated into current wind farms, effectively creating a “second layer” of power production. By placing these turbines above conventional rigs, land already zoned for energy generation can be utilized more efficiently.
Early assessments suggest that this dual-layer strategy could theoretically support up to 4,000 high-altitude towers across Germany, though these figures remain projections rather than firm plans. Euronews has reported that the prototype is expected to generate between 30 and 33 gigawatt-hours annually, though precise output figures will only be verified once the system begins commercial operations.

As construction crews finalize internal wiring and testing, the industry is watching closely for the project’s official commissioning, scheduled for November 2026. Data gathered during this pilot phase will be critical in determining whether the performance gains match the ambitious theoretical models.
According to the Associated Press, if the Schipkau turbine proves successful, GICON intends to establish a larger wind farm featuring several additional high-altitude units. For now, however, the structure stands as a testament to the evolving scale of renewable energy, waiting to see if its elevated position truly unlocks a more productive future for wind power.
