Geologists Searching for Copper Find 115 Million Year Old Dinosaur Deep Underground
A routine mining survey in China has unearthed a 115-million-year-old dinosaur fossil, sparking intense debate and mystery among paleontological experts.
A routine survey for copper deposits in Inner Mongolia has led to an unexpected paleontological milestone. While drilling 473 meters beneath the surface near the settlement of Guaizihu, geologists recovered fragments of a dinosaur that roamed the region roughly 115 million years ago. The discovery, detailed in a report published September 5, 2026, in the journal Earth History and Biodiversity, marks the first time dinosaur remains have been confirmed in the western reaches of the Yin’gen-Ejinaqi Basin.
Subterranean Science Beneath the Desert
The find, cataloged as 208GPV01, was not the intended target of the exploration team, who were primarily focused on assessing mineral potential within the Bayan Gobi Formation. The specimen—comprising a sacral rib, several caudal vertebrae, neural arches, and ossified tendons—emerged from a drill core extracted from a depth of roughly 1,500 feet. Dr. Lida Xing of the China University of Geosciences and the Dinosaur Odyssey Science Museum, who directed the analysis, noted that while the material is fragmentary, its location is of significant scientific interest.

Analyzing the Fragmented Record
To identify the remains, the research team utilized geometric morphometrics to compare the proportions of the recovered bones with those of various ornithischian dinosaurs—a group of herbivorous, bird-hipped creatures common during the Cretaceous. The analysis revealed that the vertebral structure of 208GPV01 shares strong similarities with the genus Psittacosaurus, a widespread horned dinosaur of early East Asian ecosystems. However, due to the limited nature of the specimen, researchers have officially classified it as an indeterminate ornithischian, maintaining a cautious scientific standard while acknowledging its potential lineage.

Expanding the Cretaceous Map
The Bayan Gobi Formation is recognized by paleontologists for its role in preserving Early Cretaceous life, having previously yielded specimens such as the hadrosauroid Penelopognathus weishampeli and the alvarezsauroid Bannykus wulatensis. Until now, however, these findings were almost exclusively confined to the eastern sections of the formation. By identifying 208GPV01 in the western Yin’gen-Ejinaqi Basin, the study broadens the known geographic range of the fauna associated with this horizon.
The research suggests that the basin’s biological history may be more closely tied to the diverse Jehol Biota of Western Liaoning than previously recognized. This accidental discovery highlights the untapped potential for paleontological data within industrial geological surveys, proving that even deep-core mineral exploration can yield profound insights into the ancient world.
