Construction Crew Uncovers €9 Million Gold Hoard Hidden in Belgian Basement Wall
Renovation crews in Belgium stumble upon a massive hidden stash of gold—who rightfully owns the treasure?
Construction crews working on a cellar in Dendermonde, Belgium, stumbled upon a concealed hoard of gold bars and coins estimated at roughly €9 million, triggering a police inquiry into its provenance.
The find occurred while the team was fitting new sewage pipes in the basement of a building owned by CAW Oost‑Vlaanderen, a welfare organization that serves a community of about 47,000 residents in East Flanders. The presence of such a valuable cache complicates the question of rightful ownership.
Hidden Wealth Turns a Routine Renovation Into a Treasure Hunt
Among the laborers was Kobe, an 18‑year‑old student on a summer placement. His initial reaction was far from the eventual €9 million assessment.
“Our first reaction was actually disbelief, amazement,” Kobe told Belgian public broadcaster VRT, according to the report. At first, he thought the objects were simply €1 coins. Then something else caught the workers’ attention. “We also saw a gold nugget lying there. That’s when we realized it was something bigger.”

The team uncovered numerous coins and bars, prompting an immediate call to law enforcement. Site manager Mario explained that retaining such a large stash would be unrealistic and illegal.
“There are so many coins and bars — it would be almost impossible,” he said. “Besides, that would be theft.”
Police Move the Gold to Secure Storage and Issue a Warning
Following the alert, the gold collection was transferred to a secure facility. Police also warned the public against approaching the active construction site in hopes of finding additional valuables.
BBC reported that the house had already been “turned upside down” and that all recovered gold was safely stored. The police force marked the incident by changing its Facebook profile picture to an image of a gold coin, expressing the hope that the treasure would eventually “end up in the right place” and make a positive impact.

CAW Oost‑Vlaanderen’s director, Geert Hillaert, described his reaction as “surprise and amazement.” He added that, should the organization eventually benefit from the find, the proceeds could support its social‑service initiatives and help meet the “enormous need we experience daily.” The final allocation, however, remains uncertain as investigators continue to determine the legitimate claimant.
Legal Questions About Who Can Claim the Treasure
A local prosecutor has launched an inquiry, but the true owner of the gold remains unidentified. Belgian law gives a potential claimant five years to come forward, meaning the discovery could remain unresolved for up to 1,823 days.
If no party asserts a claim within that timeframe, civil law allows the find to be split between the discoverer and the property owner, provided the treasure is not linked to criminal activity. Until the investigation concludes, both the construction crew and CAW Oost‑Vlaanderen may have to wait to learn whether they will receive a share of the €9 million bounty.

The key issue remains unresolved: who will ultimately be entitled to the discovered gold?
