Meet the Woman With a 4 Inch Tongue Who Can Lick Her Own Eyeball

For Adrianne Lewis, the ability to touch her own eyeball with her tongue is not just a parlor trick, but a bizarre physical reality she would rather leave behind. The Michigan native, who gained international attention in 2015 when videos of her stretching her tongue to touch her nose, chin, and elbow went viral, views the act with a sense of repulsion. “I don’t like that trick,” she told CBS Detroit. “It’s like you’re licking your dog, if your dog had short hair. It’s so weird!”

Lewis possesses a tongue measuring roughly 4 inches, a trait that appears to be an inherited family characteristic. Her mother, grandmother, and great-grandfather all shared similar physical traits, though Lewis speculates that her habit of sticking her tongue out as a child may have contributed to its length. During her elementary school years, the unique feature served as an unconventional defense mechanism against bullies. “I would just flick my tongue in bullies’ faces and freak them out,” she recalled.

Despite her viral fame, Lewis has found it difficult to claim an official spot in the record books. She has submitted applications to Guinness World Records on three separate occasions, each ending in rejection. Her length—roughly 4 inches—places her in close competition with current record holders, yet the official verification process remains stringent. Guinness requires measurements to be taken from the tip of the tongue to the middle of the closed top lip.

While Guinness remained elusive, other organizations took notice. *Ripley’s Believe It or Not* featured Lewis in its annual publication, a prospect that she found far more welcoming than the often-uncomfortable digital attention she received online. When she launched her YouTube channel in 2013, she quickly accumulated hundreds of views, though the influx of internet attention brought a mix of fascination and unwanted commentary. Edward Meyer, vice president of exhibits for *Ripley’s*, noted that stories of extreme anatomy often capture public interest, stating, “As an editor, I see that kind of story and it brings a smile to my face and I want the world to know about it.”

The Science and Records of Extreme Tongue Length

The current world record holder for men, Nick Stoeberl, holds a measurement of 10.1 centimeters (3.97 inches), which was verified by Guinness World Records in 2012. Stoeberl has embraced his unique physiology, even using his tongue for unconventional tasks like painting with acrylics. However, he has also acknowledged the physical risks associated with such extreme length, noting that he faces a higher risk of choking on his tongue while sleeping.

The women’s record, which has stood since 2010, is held by Chanel Tapper of California, whose tongue measures 9.75 centimeters (3.8 inches). Like Lewis and Stoeberl, these record holders often find their anatomical outliers subject to both immense curiosity and the rigorous standards of measurement required to enter the annals of world records. For those involved, the “long tongue” phenomenon is a legacy of genetics that continues to fascinate the public, even if the individuals behind the records sometimes wish for a more ordinary existence.
