A four-member international crew has successfully returned to Earth, concluding a sprawling 237-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The Crew-12 mission reached its conclusion on October 8, 2026, when their SpaceX Dragon capsule performed a precision splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Los Angeles at 11:34 a.m. EDT.

The returning astronauts—NASA’s Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, the European Space Agency’s Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev—spent nearly eight months conducting scientific research and station maintenance in the harsh environment of low-Earth orbit. The mission was notable for its diverse experience levels, blending the expertise of seasoned veterans with the maiden flights of newcomers.

Career Milestones and Orbital Records

For NASA veteran Jessica Meir, the return to Earth marked a significant personal achievement. Following this mission, Meir has now logged a cumulative total of 440 days in space. This milestone elevates her into the ranks of NASA’s top 10 most experienced astronauts by time spent in orbit, cementing her legacy in long-duration spaceflight.

The mission proved equally transformative for Hathaway and Adenot, who completed their inaugural spaceflights during this expedition. Their successful return represents a critical validation of their training and operational readiness. Meanwhile, Fedyaev added this extended stay to his professional record with Roscosmos, underscoring the collaborative, multinational effort required to sustain continuous human presence on the ISS.

High-Stakes Operations in Microgravity

Beyond the daily rigors of station life, the Crew-12 team was responsible for executing four complex extravehicular activities (EVAs). These spacewalks are among the most challenging tasks in space exploration, requiring astronauts to exit the safety of the pressurized station to perform exterior maintenance, hardware upgrades, and infrastructure improvements that are impossible to conduct from within the cabin.

NASA confirmed that the recovery sequence began immediately upon the capsule’s arrival in the Pacific. Recovery teams utilized fast-response boats to reach the Dragon, conducting essential safety checks before maneuvering the capsule onto the deck of a recovery ship. Throughout the lifting process, the four astronauts remained secured inside the spacecraft until it was safely brought aboard the vessel.

This mission highlights the ongoing utility of the orbital laboratory as a testing ground for both long-duration human health research and the development of next-generation technologies. With the safe return of the Crew-12 team, the focus now shifts to the scientific data collected during their nearly eight-month stay, which will provide vital insights for future crewed missions deeper into our solar system.
