Webb Telescope Detects Rare Molecule on Giant Planet That Defies Formation Theories

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has detected ammonia in the atmosphere of HATS-6 b, a massive exoplanet situated approximately 500 light-years away. Beyond the rare chemical discovery, the data has revealed that the planet is significantly colder than previous theoretical models suggested, forcing astronomers to rethink how such large worlds evolve around small, dim stars.

HATS-6 b is a Jupiter-sized gas giant that orbits an M dwarf star—a stellar classification typically deemed too small to provide the raw materials necessary for forming such gargantuan planets. Because these stars possess less protoplanetary disk material, the existence of HATS-6 b presents a significant challenge to conventional planetary formation theories. The findings were detailed in The Astronomical Journal as part of the Giant Exoplanets around M-dwarf Stars (GEMS) program.

A Chemical Surprise in the Alien Atmosphere

By utilizing transmission spectroscopy, researchers were able to decode the light passing through the planet’s atmosphere as it transited its host star. This analysis confirmed the presence of four distinct molecules: water, methane, carbon dioxide, and ammonia. The detection of ammonia is particularly significant, as it has rarely been observed in the atmosphere of an exoplanet.

“Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen are all things that have previously been found in atmospheres of giant planets outside our solar system, but ammonia is something almost never detected before,” said Giannina Guzmán Caloca, the study’s lead author and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland.

Nitrogen-based compounds like ammonia are theoretically expected to appear more frequently in the atmospheres of cooler giant planets, making this discovery a key data point in understanding the chemical diversity of worlds orbiting low-mass stars.

The Mystery of the Missing Heat

Perhaps the most baffling result from the JWST observations is the discrepancy in temperature. Conventional models, which assume the planet efficiently absorbs stellar radiation and redistributes it, predicted that HATS-6 b should reach temperatures around 800 degrees Fahrenheit (425 degrees Celsius). However, initial measurements suggest the atmosphere is much cooler, hovering near 250 degrees Fahrenheit (120 degrees Celsius).

Guzmán Caloca suggests that the presence of high-altitude clouds or a thick haze layer might be responsible for this thermal anomaly. By reflecting a significant portion of incoming starlight back into space before it can contribute to atmospheric heating, these reflective layers could account for the lower-than-expected temperatures.

Expanding the Exoplanet Catalog

HATS-6 b is among a select group of only 40 known giant planets orbiting M dwarfs. The GEMS program is currently investigating seven of these systems to determine if the formation processes for giants around small stars mirror those found in larger, more traditional solar systems.

As the count of confirmed exoplanets exceeds 6,000, objects like HATS-6 b remain vital for testing the limits of current astrophysical knowledge. Future observations are planned to confirm the nature of the atmospheric haze and further refine our understanding of these rare, oversized worlds.
