NASA has officially greenlit the development of the PRobe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics (PRIMA), a specialized space telescope designed to capture the universe in far-infrared light. This mission marks the debut of the agency’s new Probe Explorers class, an initiative established to bridge the gap between small-scale scientific projects and flagship observatories.

Unlocking Cosmic Secrets Through Infrared Vision

By operating in the far-infrared spectrum, PRIMA is engineered to pierce through dense cosmic dust and observe phenomena that remain obscured to traditional optical and near-infrared telescopes. Equipped with a 5.9-foot mirror, the observatory will conduct high-sensitivity surveys aimed at unraveling the life cycles of stars, the formation of planetary systems, and the growth of supermassive black holes across cosmic history.

The mission is designed to act as a crucial complement to existing assets like the James Webb Space Telescope, effectively filling a specific observational niche that connects infrared data with radio-frequency insights. According to Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, the telescope will provide a unique perspective on the evolution of the universe, including the chemical origins of water on Earth.

A Collaborative Path to a 2033 Launch

Following a rigorous evaluation of its scientific objectives and technical feasibility, PRIMA has entered Phase B development. During this stage, engineers will refine the telescope’s design and advance the essential hardware before the project faces a final confirmation review. NASA has capped the mission’s budget at $1.2 billion, excluding launch costs, with an expected launch date in 2033 and a baseline operational lifespan of five years.

The project is a significant international undertaking, managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in collaboration with the Goddard Space Flight Center and the Marshall Space Flight Center. Global partners include space agencies from France, Italy, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

Evolving the Legacy of the Explorers Program

The establishment of the Probe Explorers category stems directly from recommendations within the 2020 Decadal Survey, which highlighted a need for mid-sized missions to address complex astrophysical questions. As the latest addition to the Explorers Program—a lineage dating back to 1958 and the launch of Explorer 1—PRIMA follows in the footsteps of landmark missions like the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE).

Shawn Domagal-Goldman, director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division, noted that the mission is a vital component of a multi-faceted approach to space science. Because no single telescope can capture the entirety of the cosmos, the integration of PRIMA into the existing fleet will provide a more holistic understanding of galactic evolution and the broader structural development of the universe.
