A new pocket‑sized device can pinpoint the moment the body switches from carbohydrate to fat metabolism by measuring acetone in exhaled air, achieving accuracy comparable to laboratory‑grade mass spectrometry.
How the technology works
Acetone, a volatile compound released when fat is oxidized, is captured by a highly selective sensor that distinguishes it from other breath constituents. A built‑in filter blocks interfering molecules, while a companion smartphone app guides users through a standardized exhalation protocol to ensure consistent sampling from deep lung air.
Validation against gold‑standard methods
In a study of twelve volunteers, researchers recorded 312 breath samples with the handheld unit and compared the results to simultaneous blood analyses and readings from a high‑precision mass spectrometer. Tests spanned light and intense exercise, as well as varied dietary regimens. The handheld sensor’s readings matched the laboratory benchmark virtually line‑for‑line, and performance remained stable over several months.
Potential clinical and consumer applications
By delivering reliable, non‑invasive metabolic data, the device could empower individuals to tailor diets, monitor ketogenic therapies for conditions such as epilepsy, and support personalized treatment plans for metabolic disorders like diabetes. Researchers also envision its use in tracking responses to GLP‑1‑based weight‑loss interventions and in amateur sports performance monitoring.
Development and future steps
The sensor technology stems from more than a decade of research at ETH Zurich, first disclosed in 2017. Collaboration between ETH’s molecular‑sensing group, spin‑off Alivion, and the University Hospital Zurich led to the prototype, marketed under the name Nutrion. Ongoing trials at the University Children’s Hospital Zurich aim to determine whether the device can improve dietary compliance for pediatric epilepsy patients.
Alivion is now seeking industrial partners and investors to expand production and explore additional use cases.
“Accurate, independent monitoring tools are essential, much like blood‑glucose meters for diabetics,” notes Andreas Güntner, professor of molecular sensing at ETH Zurich.
Lead author Simone Hersberger adds, “Our calibration routine accounts for individual lung volume, ensuring that each breath sample reflects the same portion of exhaled air.”
