A new laboratory technique can identify the lethal tick‑borne illness in just 40 minutes, offering a potential shortcut to life‑saving therapy.
Rocky Mountain spotted fever can progress from a bite to high fever, severe headache and rash within a few days. Prompt diagnosis is essential, yet current tests often require costly equipment, are difficult to access, or lack the sensitivity to spot low bacterial loads in blood.
The innovative assay mixes a patient’s DNA with specially formulated reagents in two sequential 20‑minute incubations performed at room temperature. After the combined 40‑minute run, a visible color shift in the reaction mixture signals the presence of the pathogen.
Clinicians typically begin treatment with doxycycline while awaiting confirmatory results, but existing diagnostic timelines can delay that decision. “Unfortunately, this disease can be particularly deadly in children if diagnosis is delayed, and often patients may not realize they have been bitten by a tick until they feel extremely ill,” explained Roman Ganta, professor of veterinary medicine and researcher at the Bond Life Sciences Center.
Ganta emphasized that faster detection would enable earlier doxycycline administration, improving patient outcomes. He envisions the assay being adopted in low‑resource and rural health centers worldwide, where advanced laboratory infrastructure is scarce.
Collaboration with the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Missouri is under way to explore clinical deployment of the test. “By making this test more accessible, more patients can benefit from our work one day,” Ganta added.
