Because the area remained isolated from modern contamination, the soil provides a high-quality environment for the recovery of ancient DNA. By analyzing the chemical composition of the sediment and conducting microscopic plant and pollen analysis, scientists hope to reconstruct the environment as it existed when the Neanderthals occupied the site.
Beyond the environmental data, researchers are investigating the possibility that a hearth or domestic installation lies deeper within the limestone bedrock. Given the unique preservation conditions of the cave, this site may soon provide some of the most definitive answers yet regarding how one of humanity’s closest extinct relatives lived, and why they eventually vanished from the map.
