Antique Market Find With Googly Eyes Identified as Rare Extinct Tasmanian Tiger Specimen

A taxidermied thylacine head found in an English antique shop has sold for over $85,000 after being identified as a rare specimen of the extinct marsupial.

A peculiar taxidermy piece, once adorned with novelty googly eyes and dismissed as a common fox head, has been formally authenticated as the remains of a Thylacinus cynocephalus, or Tasmanian tiger. The rare specimen, which was purchased for just £50 at an antiques market in southeast England, has now been cataloged in the International Thylacine Specimen Database.

From Thrift Store Oddity to Rare Scientific Discovery

The buyer initially acquired the head for its humorous appearance, never suspecting it was a relic of one of the 20th century’s most significant extinctions. Andrew Stowe, an auctioneer at Auctioneum, noted that even the original seller was shocked when experts revealed the true nature of the item. The realization that the object was a genuine, albeit forgotten, thylacine specimen transformed a novelty purchase into a significant piece of natural history.

Natural-history collector James Cranfield eventually secured the item. Upon closer inspection, he noticed anatomical inconsistencies with a fox, most notably the dentition. While foxes possess six upper incisors, the specimen displayed the eight characteristic of the thylacine. Follow-up CT scans and professional radiographic analysis confirmed the identification, allowing it to be officially entered into the records of known surviving thylacine material.

A Legacy Lost to Time

According to Auctioneum, complete mounts of the animal are exceptionally scarce, making this find a major asset for researchers. Project director Stephen Sleightholme of the International Thylacine Specimen Database confirmed that the find adds to a collection of roughly 800 known objects, including skeletons and tissue samples, that allow scientists to piece together the history of this unique predator.

Potential for Future Genetic Research

The discovery arrives at a time of renewed interest in the thylacine, driven by advancements in genomic sequencing and the work of groups like Colossal Biosciences, which are investigating the possibility of de-extinction technologies. Previous research has indicated that the thylacine population was suffering from limited genetic diversity long before the arrival of humans, a finding made possible through the study of preserved specimens.

While the specimen is currently being preserved as a historical record, there is hope that further non-invasive analysis could yield additional biological data. By using techniques that minimize physical damage to the taxidermy, scientists may be able to extract further insights into the anatomy and evolutionary history of an animal that has been absent from the wild for nearly a century.
