Millions of Abandoned Oil Wells Are Leaking Methane and Toxic Chemicals Across the US

Across the United States, a massive industrial legacy lies beneath the surface, manifesting as millions of abandoned oil and gas wells that pose mounting environmental and public health risks. According to 2023 estimates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, roughly 3.7 million such wells are scattered across the nation, relics of an industry that has been drilling since 1859. Startlingly, more than half of these sites remain unplugged, left to decay without proper oversight.

The proximity of these structures to human populations is a growing point of concern. Research led by McGill University engineer Mary Kang and published in Environmental Research Letters indicates that approximately 4.6 million Americans—roughly 13 percent of the total population—reside within a half-mile radius of a documented orphaned well. These are sites where the original operators have vanished or become insolvent, leaving the burden of environmental containment to the public sector.

Hidden Emissions and Toxic Threats

The primary concern surrounding these dormant wells is their role as conduits for hazardous emissions. Collectively, they are estimated to vent 2.6 million metric tons of methane annually, a potent greenhouse gas that traps atmospheric heat far more efficiently than carbon dioxide. Beyond climate impacts, these sites can release toxic substances like hydrogen sulfide, which poses direct human health risks.

The McGill University study underscores that beyond air pollution, these wells threaten to contaminate groundwater and degrade sensitive ecosystems. While nonprofit entities such as the Well Done Foundation have stepped in to cap some of these sites, the sheer scale of the problem continues to outpace current remediation efforts.

The Permian Basin Crisis

The problem is particularly acute in the Permian Basin, a vast energy-rich region spanning parts of western Texas and southeastern New Mexico. An area rivaling South Dakota in size, the Basin has hosted a century of intensive extraction. Today, it contains approximately 600,000 wells, with over 8,000 officially classified as orphaned—a figure that continues to climb.

The financial barrier to remediation is staggering. While Congress authorized $4.7 billion in 2021 to support cleanup efforts, reports from ABC News suggest that fully addressing the backlog would require more than 50 times that investment. These costs are often compounded by the technical complexity of plugging aging infrastructure that may have been compromised by decades of neglect.

Emerging Dangers from Wastewater Injection

New challenges are also emerging, particularly in Texas, where active energy operations are complicating the management of defunct wells. Companies frequently inject massive volumes of industrial wastewater underground, and there is evidence that toxic chemicals are migrating upward through these abandoned conduits. The state’s regulator, the Texas Railroad Commission, recently noted a 53 percent surge in reports of leaking “zombie wells” over the last fiscal year, highlighting that as long as the nation’s energy landscape continues to evolve, the ghosts of past drilling practices will remain a persistent and costly environmental liability.
