A group of 13 little penguins, known scientifically as Eudyptula minor, has completed an international transit from the United Kingdom to Spain as part of a strategic conservation program. The birds, recognized as the smallest penguin species on the planet at just 33 centimeters in height, were moved from their former home at SEA LIFE Weymouth in Dorset to a newly constructed facility in Benalmádena on the Costa del Sol.

This relocation marks the establishment of a second European colony for the species, which is native to the coastal fringes of Australia and New Zealand. The complex logistical operation involved transporting the birds from Dorset to London’s Heathrow Airport, followed by a flight to Madrid and a final journey to their destination in Andalusia. To ensure the safety and comfort of the penguins, they were housed in custom-built crates that maintained proper ventilation and kept compatible social groups together. Each bird underwent rigorous veterinary screening for conditions like avian influenza and Newcastle disease prior to departure.

The new habitat, branded as Isla del Pingüino Azul (Blue Penguin Island), has been meticulously engineered to replicate the species’ natural environment. According to reports, the enclosure features rocky shorelines, sandy terrain, and specialized water zones. Crucially, the site includes two large communal caves and seven dedicated nesting areas, which experts believe will facilitate breeding and long-term population growth.

Seb Webster, general manager at the Weymouth facility, described the transfer as a bittersweet but essential milestone for the species. “These little birds have captured the hearts of our guests and teams for years, so while it’s emotional to say goodbye to some of them, we’re thrilled they’ll be helping establish a thriving second colony in Spain,” Webster noted in the Dorset Echo.

Unlike their Antarctic cousins, little penguins are accustomed to temperate coastal climates, making the Spanish environment a suitable habitat for their survival. The initiative, managed in cooperation with SEA LIFE, aims to bolster international research and public awareness regarding the environmental pressures, such as climate change, currently threatening wild populations.

With the successful arrival of the 13 birds, SEA LIFE Benalmádena is now the only venue in Spain to host these diminutive marine birds. The ongoing conservation project is expected to yield valuable data for biologists while providing the public with a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges facing one of the world’s most vulnerable penguin species.
