For more than four centuries, the Mercator projection has served as the definitive image of our planet. Designed in 1569 by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator to assist sailors in plotting straight-line courses across open oceans, the map prioritizes navigational utility over geographic precision. However, this maritime focus comes at a cost, as the mathematical transformation required to flatten a spherical Earth leads to significant distortion, causing landmasses near the poles to appear massive while shrinking those near the equator.
The most striking example of this discrepancy is found in Africa, which appears on a traditional Mercator map to be roughly the size of Greenland, even though the continent is actually 14 times larger. In a move to address these long-standing inaccuracies, a new United Nations-backed resolution is encouraging global institutions, educators, and technology providers to adopt projections like the Equal Earth model, which offers a more faithful representation of global land area.
Beyond Geography: The Push for Accurate Representation
The non-binding UN resolution does not mandate a legal ban on the Mercator system, which remains a standard tool for nautical explorers and sailors. Instead, the initiative serves as a call to action for governments and organizations to move toward more proportional depictions of continents. For proponents, this is about more than just cartography; it is about correcting the subconscious bias created by centuries of maps that inflate the scale of Northern Hemisphere territories like Greenland and Russia at the expense of regions in the Global South.
Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey, a key advocate for the measure, framed the issue as a matter of fairness, noting that the way we visualize the world shapes how we perceive the importance of the nations within it. The initiative, championed by the African Union, received overwhelming support from the international community, with 164 nations voting in favor of the resolution to encourage more representative cartographic standards.
The Lone Dissenter and the Reality of Cartographic Trade-offs
The United States stood as the only nation to formally vote against the resolution. Washington officials argued that the UN should prioritize urgent issues regarding global peace and development rather than engaging in debates over established cartographic conventions. The U.S. delegation characterized the push as an unnecessary preoccupation with an outdated system, suggesting the effort carried an ideological subtext.
Despite the support for the Equal Earth projection, geographers caution that the quest for a perfect map is a scientific impossibility. Because the Earth is a three-dimensional sphere, any attempt to display it on a flat surface forces a trade-off between shape, size, distance, and direction. While the Equal Earth projection excels at maintaining land-area proportions, it still contains its own specific set of distortions. Ultimately, the UN’s decision marks a symbolic shift, acknowledging that while the Mercator map remains useful for technical navigation, it should no longer be the default lens through which the public understands the relative scale of the world.
