A Milan labor judge has ordered the reinstatement of a teacher at the prestigious Saint Louis School, ruling that the institution’s decision to terminate her employment over classroom management concerns was legally unsubstantiated. The case, which drew attention for its focus on minute pedagogical details, highlights the threshold required for disciplinary action within professional academic settings.

The teacher, who had been a permanent staff member since August 2020, was dismissed by the British international school on July 17, 2025. Her termination followed a disciplinary letter issued just weeks prior, which cataloged a series of grievances regarding her performance with students aged 3 to 5.

The school’s allegations against the teacher focused heavily on her daily classroom interactions. Specifically, administrators took issue with her habit of assisting young children with tasks such as peeling bananas, opening yogurt containers, and pouring water. The school argued these actions hindered the children’s development of essential motor skills and independence. Additional complaints included her method of introducing an astronaut doll to the class, perceived excessive direction during activities, and handling of routine communications with parents regarding logistics like school events and missing equipment.

Judicial Review of Classroom Conduct

Judge Antonio Lombardi, tasked with reviewing the dismissal, examined whether these specific classroom incidents constituted professional misconduct warranting termination. According to reporting from Il Giorno, the court found that the school failed to identify any concrete breaches of established conduct rules that would justify the severity of a firing.

The judge concluded that while the school may have preferred a different teaching philosophy, the cited incidents—whether taken individually or collectively—did not rise to the level of serious negligence required for a lawful dismissal. Consequently, the court ordered the school to reinstate the teacher and provide compensation for back wages.

While the court ruled in favor of the teacher regarding her job security, it did deny her claims for damages related to allegations of workplace harassment and demotion. The decision, as detailed in the judgment, serves as a reminder of the strict evidentiary requirements employers must meet when justifying the termination of permanent staff.
