Humanoid robots often give themselves away with telltale signs of artificiality. A whirring motor, a stiff pivot, or an awkward pause can instantly reveal a machine’s true nature. However, Moya, a revolutionary new robot from Shanghai’s DroidUp, defies these expectations. When the company unveiled footage of its latest humanoid earlier this year, viewers were captivated by its uncanny ability to smile, nod, maintain eye contact, and walk with a fluidity that left many wondering if they were watching a human or a machine.

This phenomenon is rooted in the uncanny valley, a concept coined by researchers to describe the eerie feeling that arises when an artificial being closely mimics human appearance or behavior. Most robot designers deliberately avoid this threshold, opting instead for a more overtly mechanical aesthetic. DroidUp, however, has chosen to push the boundaries, creating a robot that blurs the line between human and machine.

Standing at 1.65 meters tall and weighing 32 kilograms, Moya boasts an impressive 92% walking posture accuracy, according to DroidUp. To further enhance its human-like appearance, the company has developed a unique system that maintains the robot’s body temperature between 32 and 36 degrees Celsius during interaction. This subtle detail may seem insignificant, but it plays a crucial role in creating a sense of physical plausibility at close range.

The key to Moya’s success lies in its pneumatic artificial muscles, which distribute force across the full structure rather than concentrating it at fixed pivot points. This design allows the robot to move with a fluidity that is reminiscent of human tissue, rather than the stiff, jerky movements typically associated with humanoid robots.

A New Era in Robotics

DroidUp’s approach to robotics is a departure from the traditional methods employed by most manufacturers. Rather than focusing on physical performance or industrial applications, the company is targeting the healthcare and education sectors, where robots will spend extended periods of time interacting with people. In these environments, trust and familiarity are crucial, and Moya’s human-like appearance and behavior are designed to foster a sense of comfort and reassurance.

The embodied intelligence framework developed by DroidUp is a critical component of Moya’s success. By modeling the robot’s muscles and predicting their behavior, the control system can adjust posture and force output in real-time, allowing Moya to move with a level of fluidity and precision that is unmatched by traditional robots.

A Prototype with a Bright Future

Moya is still a prototype, and DroidUp has released limited technical detail about the platform underneath it. However, the company has set a commercial release target of late 2026, with a reported starting price of around 1.2 million yuan. As the robot continues to evolve, it is likely to play a significant role in shaping the future of robotics, particularly in the healthcare and education sectors.
