A remarkably complete Tyrannosaurus rex dubbed Gus is slated for sale at Sotheby’s, drawing global attention as the most valuable dinosaur specimen ever listed for auction.

South Dakota Ranch Yields a Legendary Predator

The fossil’s provenance traces back to the late cattle rancher Gary “Gus” Licking, who repeatedly uncovered dinosaur teeth and tiny bone fragments on his South Dakota property. Those finds prompted him to contact Thomas Heitkamp of Theropoda Expeditions, urging a systematic search of a 6,500‑acre tract on the ranch. The team’s work in 2021 uncovered a nearly complete T. rex skeleton, later named Gus in honor of Licking, who passed away a year after excavation began.

The initial discovery was documented in a Popular Science article, noting that the site yielded more than isolated bones; researchers quickly recognized the significance of the find.

Six Years of Fieldwork and Lab Work Bring Gus to Light

“This specimen took three years to excavate, with the team sometimes working for weeks straight without finding a thing. It really does feel like tackling the world’s hardest puzzle, except we have to find all the pieces first.” Heitkamp said in the press release.

He also highlighted that the site preserved evidence of a broader Cretaceous ecosystem, including plant and animal fossils that provide context for the predator’s environment.

“We documented each stage with quarry maps, inventories, and collection data. In the end, our diligence paid off and we were delighted to discover what turned out to be a huge and incredibly complete T. rex specimen,” he added.

After the bones were extracted, an additional three years were devoted to laboratory preparation. Technicians removed surrounding rock, cleaned each element, and catalogued the fragments before reassembling the skeleton, bringing the total project timeline to six years.

Record‑Setting Valuation for the Fossil

The assembled skeleton comprises 183 fossil bones, representing roughly 82 % of the animal’s known skeletal framework. Highlights include a well‑preserved skull, a complete pelvis, and a furcula (wishbone). The specimen measures about 38 feet long and stands roughly 12.5 feet tall, with the skull alone extending more than four feet.

Sotheby’s has placed the auction estimate between $20 million and $30 million, a figure described as the highest ever assigned to a dinosaur offered for sale.
