Astronomers use four laser beams to peer deeper into the Milky Way’s core
A recent photograph released by the European Southern Observatory showcases four powerful laser beams that appear to converge on the Milky Way’s centre, producing a visual that feels more cinematic than scientific. The scene highlights the cutting‑edge adaptive optics technology that allows astronomers to bypass the blurring effects of Earth’s atmosphere and capture exceptionally sharp images of distant celestial objects.
How the VLT Uses Laser Guide Stars
The picture was captured at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, a facility that combines four 8‑meter Unit Telescopes to form one of the world’s most capable ground‑based observatories. Each unit fires a concentrated laser pulse upward, where the light interacts with sodium atoms roughly 90 kilometres above the surface, creating artificial “guide stars.”
These synthetic points of light serve as references for measuring the constantly shifting refraction caused by atmospheric turbulence, temperature gradients, and wind. By tracking the apparent motion of the guide stars, the VLT’s adaptive optics system can compute real‑time corrections and adjust its deformable mirrors many times per second, effectively sharpening the view of far‑off galaxies, nebulae, and black holes.
A Celestial Perspective Toward the Galactic Center
What makes the image especially striking is its alignment with the region that houses the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*. The lasers, however, never travel beyond Earth’s upper atmosphere; perspective makes them appear to meet at the distant core.

Close inspection of the photo reveals several luminous knots along the laser paths. According to ESO, these bright spots appear when thin cloud layers intersect the beams, creating a cascade of tiny points that become most noticeable near the apparent convergence.
The Photographer’s Perspective
The image was taken by ESO astronomer Anthony Berdeu, who was stationed on the VLT platform during the laser demonstration.
“For me, this image is an accomplishment,” Anthony Berdeu said in a statement. “The first night the lasers were shined to point at the galactic center, I had to be on the VLT platform to take a picture.”
His remarks underscore the rare convergence of high‑tech instrumentation and a well‑known region of the night sky, producing a visual record that is both scientifically valuable and aesthetically arresting.
