Astronomers Spot Unusually Slow Stars: Could Alien Tech Be Braking Their Spin

Study suggests advanced civilizations might tap stellar rotation energy, imprinting faint cosmic signatures as evidence of their activity.

A recent preprint on arXiv proposes that advanced extraterrestrial societies might harvest a star’s rotational energy instead of encircling it with massive collectors, opening a fresh avenue for technosignature detection.

Rethinking the Hunt for Alien Engineering

Traditional SETI efforts have largely focused on megastructures such as Dyson spheres—hypothetical shells or swarms that would capture a star’s luminosity and re‑emit waste heat in the infrared. Despite extensive infrared surveys, no definitive evidence of such constructs has emerged.

Extracting Stellar Spin: The J‑Harvesting Idea

Turkish high‑school student Sahin Torlakcik introduced the concept of Stellar J‑Harvesting in a paper available on arXiv. The proposal suggests that a civilization could tap the immense angular momentum of a rotating star, converting it into usable power while emitting far less thermal radiation than a Dyson‑type array.

According to a discussion on Universe Today, the method would involve large conductive structures that couple to the star’s magnetic field and stellar wind. By channeling Alfvén waves, such installations could gradually siphon angular momentum, slowing the star’s rotation.

Another scenario described in the study envisions a massive orbital ring situated near 1 astronomical unit—approximately Earth’s distance from the Sun. Through Lorentz‑force coupling, the ring could extract energy from the star’s spin without significantly dimming its visible output.

A New Kind of Technosignature

If extraterrestrials employ J‑harvesting, the most observable clue would be an anomalously slow rotation rate for a star of a given type and age. Researchers could therefore target stars whose spin periods deviate markedly from the norm, rather than searching for excess infrared emission.

To test this hypothesis, Torlakcik analyzed data from the Kepler field, focusing on 6,725 FGK main‑sequence stars after eliminating candidates explainable by conventional astrophysics.

Two objects stood out: KIC 67606183 and KIC 9834255. Both are G‑type stars comparable to the Sun, yet each exhibits a rotation period of roughly 61–65 days, far longer than the typical 5–10‑day cycles observed in similar stars.

Cautionary Interpretation

The authors emphasize that the slow spin of these stars does not constitute proof of alien activity. Natural explanations—such as unseen binary companions, unusual chemical abundances, or evolutionary processes—could also account for the observations.

Nevertheless, the study underscores a broader limitation in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence: detection methods are inherently biased toward phenomena we anticipate. If a civilization manipulates stellar systems through subtle magnetic or rotational interactions, conventional infrared surveys may overlook it entirely.
