Astronomers Just Detected a Massive Solar Style Storm Erupting From a Supermassive Black Hole

Astronomers have detected a solar-like eruption near a supermassive black hole, revealing how magnetic energy drives powerful winds in deep space.

Astronomers have captured evidence of a violent magnetic eruption occurring near a supermassive black hole that mirrors the behavior of storms on our own Sun. The event, observed within the active galaxy NGC 3783, suggests that the extreme environments surrounding cosmic giants are governed by the same magnetic reconnection processes that drive solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

The study, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, was spearheaded by Gal Vardi, a doctoral student at the Technion Faculty of Physics, alongside Professor Ehud Behar and an international research consortium. By analyzing data from the XRISM and XMM-Newton space observatories, the team identified a specific timing signature known as the Neupert effect—a hallmark of solar activity that has never before been confirmed in the vicinity of an active galactic nucleus.

Cosmic Parallels in Extreme Environments

The solar corona is known to be an volatile region where tangled magnetic fields snap and reconnect, instantly releasing vast quantities of stored energy. This process accelerates charged particles, which then heat up the surrounding plasma or are launched into space as coronal mass ejections. Scientists have long hypothesized that a similar mechanism might power the ultra-hot coronae that shroud supermassive black holes, where temperatures can soar to nearly a billion kelvins.

While previous models often invoked magnetic reconnection as a theoretical driver for these black hole coronae, concrete observational proof has remained elusive. The July 2024 monitoring campaign of NGC 3783—a galaxy hosting a black hole roughly 28 million times the mass of the Sun—offered the first high-precision look at this phenomenon in action.

Decoding the Flare’s Timing Signature

During the ten-day observation, researchers tracked the X-ray brightness of the black hole’s surroundings. Most flares observed displayed synchronized fluctuations in energy. However, one distinct event defied the norm: the high-energy (hard) X-rays peaked approximately eight hours before the lower-energy (soft) X-rays began their rise. Furthermore, the hard X-ray intensity dropped sharply as the soft X-ray emissions faded more gradually.

This sequence is a classic manifestation of the Neupert effect. In this scenario, hard X-rays serve as a proxy for the primary energy release caused by particle acceleration, while the subsequent surge in soft X-rays represents the delayed heating of dense gas as those particles collide with the surrounding material. The statistical correlation between these two emissions was remarkably strong, providing a clear observational link to magnetic reconnection.

XRISM observations of NGC 3783 show closely linked hard and soft X-ray emissions, except during a highlighted flare. The flare’s unusual X-ray hardness sets it apart from the rest of the observation.

Connecting Flaring to Galactic Winds

The significance of this discovery is amplified by its correlation with a previously identified ultrafast outflow in NGC 3783, which reached speeds of roughly one-fifth the speed of light. The researchers propose that this material is the galactic equivalent of a solar coronal mass ejection. In their model, the reconnection event not only heats the local gas but also propels a massive burst of matter away from the black hole environment.

By using the timing of the flare as a diagnostic tool, the team was able to estimate the scale of the reconnection region, placing it within approximately 30 gravitational radii of the black hole. While further research is needed to determine if this behavior is a common feature of all active galaxies, the findings demonstrate that our fundamental understanding of solar physics can be extended to explain the most extreme energy-release events in the universe.

Comparisons of X-ray brightness across different energy bands reveal distinct patterns in soft and hard X-ray emissions during a flare. The strongest correlation occurs between hard X-rays (7.2–12 keV) and changes in soft X-rays (1.2–2.0 keV), suggesting the two arise from different physical processes.
