Histopathology (derived from three Greek words: ἱστός histos "tissue", πάθος pathos "suffering", and -λογία -logia "study of") is the microscopic examination of tissue to study the manifestations of disease. In clinical medicine, histopathology specifically involves the examination of a biopsy or surgical specimen by a pathologist. This process occurs after the specimen has been processed and histological sections have been placed onto glass slides for detailed analysis.

In contrast, cytopathology focuses on the examination of either free cells or tissue micro-fragments, known as "cell blocks".
