High Dose Vitamin D Supplements Linked to Better Cognitive Function in At Risk Adults
New research suggests that high-dose vitamin D supplementation could improve cognitive function in individuals at risk of developing dementia.
A growing body of evidence indicates that high-dose vitamin D supplementation could serve as a protective measure for brain health in individuals showing early warning signs of cognitive decline. As the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease continues to climb—with projections suggesting nearly 13 million Americans will be living with the condition by 2050—researchers are increasingly focused on identifying accessible, modifiable lifestyle factors that might slow this progression.
Targeting the critical window for intervention
A recent study published in Sleep Medicine investigated a group of 54 adults who exhibited both mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and sleep disturbances. These two conditions are frequently cited as early indicators of dementia, marking a phase where cognitive function has begun to shift, yet the brain may still be responsive to supportive interventions.
The findings revealed a significant correlation between higher vitamin D intake and improved mental performance. Specifically, participants who consumed at least 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily achieved scores over 13% higher on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) compared to those who did not take such supplements. The MoCA is a standardized clinical tool used to measure memory, attention, and executive function. Notably, lower daily doses of the supplement did not correlate with these cognitive gains.
“In older adults experiencing both sleep disturbance and mild cognitive impairment, this may represent a critical window for intervention, when cognitive changes are emerging, but opportunities to support brain health may remain,” explained Victoria Pak, the study’s senior author and an associate professor at Emory University’s Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing.
The sleep and cognition connection
The relationship between sleep and brain health is complex and bidirectional. Previous data suggests that approximately half of individuals with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease struggle with sleep disturbances. While vitamin D is primarily recognized for its role in nerve and muscle function, it also plays a significant part in regulating sleep-wake cycles. Insufficient levels of the nutrient have previously been linked to insomnia and fragmented sleep, factors that can exacerbate cognitive decline.
This research marks the first attempt to specifically examine how vitamin D supplementation influences cognition within this high-risk subset of the population. Interestingly, the researchers observed that the cognitive benefits remained consistent regardless of whether participants took vitamin D2, which is often sourced from fungi or plants, or vitamin D3, which is typically derived from animal-based foods or generated through sun exposure.
As the scientific community works to address the rising burden of neurodegenerative diseases, Pak emphasized the necessity of finding scalable solutions. “Identifying accessible and modifiable factors, such as vitamin D supplement intake, during the earlier stages of cognitive decline may become increasingly important, particularly as rates of Alzheimer’s disease continue to rise,” she noted.
