Coastal waters along Finland harbor complex marine habitats that serve as vital ecological meeting points for various fish species across their life cycles. Researchers investigating these delicate aquatic ecosystems recently issued a formal update regarding a key data table that maps how different fish life stages depend on specific underwater environments. The update, published in Ambio, addresses an administrative publishing error involving Table 4 in a prior paper authored by Kaikkonen and colleagues.

How Underwater Habitats Support Finnish Coastal Fish Populations

Understanding the connections between marine habitats and distinct life stages helps conservationists protect vulnerable aquatic populations in northern Europe. The original study evaluates how spawning grounds, nursery areas, and adult feeding zones interact with specific underwater features along the Finnish coast. In these assessments, numerical values are assigned to indicate the relative contribution of each habitat type to specific fish species, where a score of three represents a high contribution and a score of zero denotes no contribution.

Additionally, the evaluation framework incorporates confidence levels for the underlying evidence, utilizing specific visual shading to denote the strength of the data. Dark petrol shading indicates peer-reviewed literature originating from the northern Baltic Sea, while medium green represents studies from the southern Baltic Sea or connected freshwater ecosystems. Light blue highlights zones relying on expert assessments, and white cells indicate areas where no literature was found.

What Caused the Correction and Why Accuracy Matters

During the production process of the original manuscript, two conflicting versions of Table 4, featuring both colored and uncolored layouts, were mistakenly processed and published side by side. This duplication created potential confusion regarding the confidence levels of the evidence, which depend heavily on the color-coded shading scheme. The newly issued publisher correction rectifies this error by replacing the flawed layout with the single correct version of the table.

Marine assessments of this scale rely on precise documentation to guide regional management and conservation policies in the Baltic region. Because researchers, policymakers, and environmental agencies utilize these matrices to evaluate human impacts on coastal ecosystems, maintaining error-free data tables is essential for scientific transparency. The corrected table now provides an accurate, unambiguous reference for scientists studying the ecological links between coastal fish populations and their respective marine habitats.

The research was published in Ambio on November 1, 2026.
