Description: A few disorders have some of the same symptoms as schizophrenia including schizoaffective disorders, schizophreniform disorder, schizotypal and schizoid personality disorders, delusional disorder, and autism (schizophrenia spectrum disorders). Since the 2000 there has been significant progress in our understanding of the early presentations, assessment, suspected neuropathology, and treatment of these disorders. Recent technological breakthroughs in basic sciences hold promise for advancing our understanding of the pathophysiology of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. This collective monograph reviewers recent researches regarding the origins, onset, course, and outcome of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. In particular, this book will be illustrate new developments in terms of conceptual models, and research methodology, genetics and genomics, brain imaging and neurochemical studies, neurophysiology and information processing in schizophrenia spectrum disorders patients. Also will be highlighted new developments in our understanding of the childhood psychosis, prodromal and first-episode states, in treatment and rehabilitation. Thus, the purpose of this book is to provide up-to-date overview of the rapid advances made in the clinical and basic science studies supporting our understanding of the relationship between cerebral processes and clinical, cognitive and other presentations of the schizophrenia spectrum disorders. In addition, this book aims to monitor important research developments, which may be relevant to treatment, and rehabilitation of patients.

Description: Translational research looks to take the latest innovations made in the laboratory setting to translate findings into effective and sustainable medical interventions and improved preventative measures. Funding support is increasingly tied to practical healthcare outcomes, with this trend likely only to increase in coming years, Translational Neuroscience: A Guide to a Successful Program, is a timely guide to developing research programs that bring translational advances to the forefront. Translational Neuroscience provides practical information from scientists with first-hand experience in developing a cutting-edge translational facility. The book opens with chapters that provide guidance to organizing a center for translational science. Chapters look at topics ranging from mentoring and career planning for clinician scientists to improving the design of core facilities and addressing infrastructure needs. The second half of the book provides valuable case studies of translational neuroscience in action, with examples ranging from using to transcranial magnetic stimulation to studies on drug abuse and telemedicine applications. The final chapter looks to the future of basic science research, how academic health centers can be reorganized, and how future generations of translational neuroscientists can be trained. Translational Neuroscience provides a blueprint to developing an innovative and successful translational research program. Deans, department chairs, academic health center administrators, and researchers will find this guide useful for drafting programs in translational research and avoiding costly pitfalls. While grounded in examples from basic neuroscience research, this book will be a useful tool to all scientists looking to develop centers of translational science across research disciplines.

Laboratory Management

Description: Laboratory Management addresses common issues and errors seen in the laboratory management process. The goal is to enable the laboratory manager to avoid or correct such errors by both individual effort and a systems approach in the laboratory. The book addresses potential issues in accreditation and regulatory compliance, laboratory and patient safety, quality management, financial management, human resources management, specimen processing logistics, performance standards, selection and management of commercial laboratories and much more. Each of these can have an adverse impact on the laboratory performance if a management error occurs. Potential management errors are described and discussed in a clinical case-based learning format to effectively illustrate the conditions that contribute to these errors and enable the laboratory manager to recognize and avoid them in daily practice. Laboratory Management Features: Descriptions of potential errors in regulatory compliance, operational processes, and patient safety in the laboratory Descriptions of potential errors in financial, human, and test utilization management in the laboratory Descriptions of potential errors in selecting automation and information systems in the laboratory Clinical case discussions provide "real world" illustrations of potential errors and how to anticipate and avoid them in practice Pocket-sized for Portability

Mass Spectrometry and Genomic Analysis

Description: The human genome project is set to revolutionise health care and medicine in the near future. The genetic make up of each individual gives clues as to the genetic factors that predispose one to a particular genetic disease. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), single base changes in the nucleotide DNA sequence of individuals, are thought to be the main cause of genetic variation. By comparing patterns of SNP allele frequencies between disease affected and control populations, disease associated SNPs can be identified and potential disease gene(s) located. These types of study necessitate genotyping of thousands of SNPs which requires the use of powerful, high throughput, systems of analysis. Mass spectrometry is fast becoming the preferred technology for this type of high throughput analysis. This book contains a collection of descriptions of some of the most outstanding advances in the field of mass spectrometry from which, I hope, the reader will be able to learn both the principles and the most up to date methods for its use in genomic analysis. It covers the general principles of the technologies and more in depth detailed descriptions for more academic reading and information. Audience: Whether you are a student, a post-doctoral researcher or experienced MS user, this book will be a stimulating addition to the analytical arena of mass spectrometry and genomic analysis.

Addiction: A Reference Encyclopedia

Description: Addiction: A Reference Encyclopedia offers straight talk and clear answers on a topic often sensationalized in the media and politicized during campaigns. Drawing from a wide variety of sources, it provides readers with a concise yet thorough review of what we know about all kinds of addictive behavior. Addiction surveys both the science of addiction and its history in the United States with two main sections: a narrative of the history of addiction as a scientific and public policy issue in the United States followed by a series of alphabetically organized entries focused on organizations, individuals, and events that have impacted our thinking about addiction. Much of the work focuses on substance abuse—alcohol, tobacco, opiates, cocaine—but the book also examines behaviors that have only recently been recognized as potentially addictive, including gambling, sexual activity, Internet usage, and more.
